10 Best Christmas Markets in Europe: A City to City Route for 2026

The Best Christmas Markets in Europe became more than a winter trip for me. They began in Vienna, where the streets glowed beneath strings of light and the cold air carried the scent of roasted chestnuts and warm punch.

I wandered from one market square to another, watching families gather around wooden stalls while couples paused beneath the Rathaus lights.

From Vienna, the journey continued to Budapest, where the mood felt livelier and the food impossible to ignore.

A hot chimney cake warmed my hands near St. Stephen’s Basilica, while music drifted through the square and people lingered long after sunset.

Each city that followed added something different. Zagreb brought movement and music, Ljubljana slowed the pace beside the river, and Salzburg wrapped the journey in bells, old streets and mountain air.

Farther west, Nuremberg, Strasbourg and Bruges filled the days with local flavours, traditions and quiet evening walks.

Riga and Tallinn closed the route beneath colder skies.

By the end, white snow had softened the streets, my heart felt lighter, and I returned home carrying memories that still felt warm.

How to Plan This European Christmas Markets Route

Allow around 19 to 22 days for the complete journey. Two nights in most cities give you time to enjoy the Christmas markets without turning every morning into another hurried departure.

Begin in Vienna, then travel by train through Budapest, Zagreb, Ljubljana, Salzburg, Nuremberg, Strasbourg and Bruges.

From Belgium, fly to Riga and finish with a direct coach to Tallinn.

Booking your arrival flight into Vienna and your return flight from Tallinn avoids travelling back across Europe.

Reserve accommodation early in Vienna, Salzburg, Strasbourg and Bruges, especially for December weekends.

Travellers with less time can follow only one part of the route, such as Vienna, Budapest, Zagreb and Ljubljana.

Vienna Christmas Markets, Austria

Vienna sits in Central Europe, and it felt like the right place to begin our route through the best Christmas markets in Europe.

My first evening started at Rathausplatz, where the illuminated City Hall rose behind rows of wooden stalls and the air smelled of toasted almonds, cinnamon and hot punch.

I wrapped both hands around a mug of Weihnachtspunsch and watched children circle the ice rink while families searched for ornaments.

Vienna is one of the best Christmas cities in Europe because every market has a different personality.

Rathausplatz delivers the grand spectacle, Schönbrunn adds an imperial setting, while Spittelberg feels more intimate inside its narrow lanes.

For food, try Käsekrainer, a sausage filled with melted cheese, followed by Kaiserschmarrn or warm Vanillekipferl. Roasted chestnuts are another simple market favourite.

Still, Vienna remains one of the best places to travel in December, especially for first time visitors and couples.

Budapest Christmas Markets, Hungary

From Vienna, I continued east to Budapest, one of Central Europe’s liveliest winter stops and a natural next chapter in this journey through the best Christmas markets in Europe.

The city felt warmer in spirit, especially around St. Stephen’s Basilica, where lights moved across the church façade and music carried through the square.

Budapest Christmas markets are especially good for couples, food lovers and travellers who prefer a lively evening.

The most famous places are the Advent Basilica market and Vörösmarty Square, both filled with local dishes, handmade gifts and seasonal drinks.

I started with a hot lángos topped with sour cream and cheese, then tried chimney cake rolled in cinnamon sugar.

For drinks, forralt bor, Hungary’s version of mulled wine, is the classic choice.

Budapest is one of the best places to travel in December because the city combines Christmas markets, river views and thermal baths.

Prices are usually lower than Vienna, although the busiest central stalls can still feel expensive.

Zagreb Christmas Market, Croatia: Best for Families

Leaving Budapest, the route turns south. The grand squares of Central Europe give way to a looser rhythm, where Christmas spills into parks, streets and gathering places rather than remaining inside one market square.

Zagreb sits in Southern Europe and offers one of the most sociable Christmas market experiences in Europe.

Advent spreads across the city, so the pleasure comes from following lights and music from one location to the next.

Begin at Zrinjevac, where glowing trees shelter the stalls, then continue towards King Tomislav Square to watch skaters circle the Ice Park.

This stop suits families and travellers who enjoy performances and shared experiences alongside seasonal shopping.

The most famous treat to try is fritule, small fried dough balls served warm with sugar or chocolate.

For something heartier, choose sarma with mashed potatoes, followed by kuhano vino, Croatia’s mulled wine.

Zagreb is one of the best places to travel in December, although its scattered layout makes comfortable shoes essential.

Ljubljana Christmas Market, Slovenia: Best for Solo Travellers

From Zagreb, the journey continues north into Ljubljana, a small capital where Southern and Central Europe seem to meet beside the river.

After Zagreb’s busy programme of music and skating, Ljubljana offered a gentler pause on our route through the best Christmas markets in Europe.

The Christmas market follows the Ljubljanica through the historic centre, with green stalls selling handmade gifts, local food and warm drinks.

It is especially comfortable for solo travellers because the main sights are close together and the riverside streets remain easy to explore on foot.

Order a Kranjska klobasa, Slovenia’s best known sausage, followed by a slice of potica filled with walnuts.

A cup of kuhano vino, the local mulled wine, is the natural companion for a cold evening.

One experience worth adding is an evening riverboat ride, when the city lights stretch across the Ljubljanica.

Ljubljana suits travellers searching for quieter xmas getaways, though those wanting enormous markets may find it modest.

Salzburg Christmas Markets, Austria: Best for Couples

From Ljubljana, the route turns north towards Salzburg, where riverfront lights give way to church bells, stone courtyards and the first clear taste of the Alps.

Salzburg sits in Central Europe, close to the German border, and easily earns its place among the best Christmas markets in Europe.

The most famous market fills Domplatz and Residenzplatz beneath the cathedral, with traditional stalls selling ornaments, warm food and seasonal drinks.

Salzburg Christmas Markets, Austria: Best for Couples

Try a Bosna, Salzburg’s spiced sausage served in bread, followed by Lebkuchen and a mug of Glühwein.

Salzburg is one of the best Christmas towns in Europe for couples, music lovers and travellers who prefer a compact historic centre.

One experience worth saving for late afternoon is the Advent market inside Hohensalzburg Fortress.

The climb leads to craft stalls and views across the rooftops as evening settles over the Old Town.

Accommodation can be expensive in December, so booking early matters, especially for xmas breaks without rushing from place to place.

Nuremberg Christmas Market, Germany

From Salzburg, the route crosses into southern Germany, where Alpine calm gives way to one of Central Europe’s oldest Christmas traditions.

Nuremberg earns its place among the best Christmas markets in Europe through its famous Christkindlesmarkt, held in the Hauptmarkt beneath the Frauenkirche.

This stop suits families, food lovers and travellers who want a traditional xmas market rather than a citywide festival.

Begin with Drei im Weggla, three small Nuremberg sausages tucked into a crusty roll, then save room for Elisenlebkuchen, the city’s soft, spiced gingerbread.

Nuremberg Christmas Market, Germany

A mug of Glühwein is the classic drink, and many visitors keep the yearly market mug as a simple souvenir.

One experience worth slowing down for is browsing the stalls covered by red and white striped roofs after sunset, when the scent of gingerbread hangs over the square.

Nuremberg Christmas Market, Germany

The market becomes extremely busy on weekends, so a weekday evening offers more space to notice the handmade ornaments and regional foods before the journey continues west towards France.

Strasbourg Christmas Market, France: Best for Couples

From Nuremberg, the route turns west into Strasbourg, where German market traditions meet French and Alsatian flavours.

Set in Western Europe near the German border, Strasbourg feels like a natural bridge between the two regions and deserves its place among the best Christmas markets in Europe.

The historic Christkindelsmärik dates to 1570, while the stalls around Strasbourg Cathedral and the enormous tree at Place Kléber attract the biggest crowds.

I started with tarte flambée, then tried bredele, the small Alsatian biscuits baked in different shapes and flavours.

The experience worth saving for last is walking from the cathedral towards Petite France after the busiest hours, when decorated windows and narrow streets become easier to notice.

Strasbourg suits couples and food lovers, although central accommodation and weekends can make it one of the more expensive Christmas getaways.

Bruges Christmas Market, Belgium

From Strasbourg, the journey continues northwest into Belgium, where Bruges slows the pace of our route through the best Christmas markets in Europe.

Its canals, stepped houses and compact centre make it one of the best Christmas cities in Europe for couples and travellers who enjoy quiet evening walks.

The main Christmas markets fill Markt and Simon Stevinplein.

Begin beneath the Belfry, then continue towards the smaller craft stalls before using our Bruges travel guide to explore the canals, historic squares and landmarks beyond the market.

Food became one of my favourite parts of Bruges.

I tried hot Belgian fries with mayonnaise and a warm waffle dusted with sugar, and I would genuinely recommend trying both.

The crisp fries were comforting in the cold, while the freshly made waffle tasted far better than the heavily topped versions sold in tourist shops.

Our guide to the best restaurants in Bruges also shares more places to enjoy Belgian food away from the crowded market square.

Christmas Day in Bruges is peaceful, but restaurants should be reserved early.

Riga Christmas Market, Latvia

From Bruges, the route leaves Western Europe and flies northeast to Riga, where the journey enters the Baltic side of Northern Europe.

The change feels immediate as grand shopping streets give way to darker winter evenings, timber stalls and the scent of gingerbread drifting through the Old Town.

Riga deserves a place among the best Christmas markets in Europe for travellers seeking quieter xmas getaways and strong local flavours.

The best known market gathers in Dome Square, where Latvian crafts, candles, woollen gifts and seasonal food surround the cathedral.

Try grey peas with bacon, a traditional Latvian Christmas dish, or choose a smoked sausage before ordering hot blackcurrant juice with Riga Black Balsam.

I would recommend trying the drink at least once because its sweet, herbal warmth suits the Baltic cold.

Return after dusk, when the daytime groups have thinned and the Old Town feels easier to absorb.

Riga is one of the most rewarding tourist destinations in December, though proper winter layers are essential.

Tallinn Christmas Market, Estonia

From Riga, the final journey heads north to Tallinn, where the Baltic route ends among stone lanes, steep rooftops and early winter darkness.

Tallinn sits in Northern Europe and gives our tour of the best Christmas markets in Europe a fitting conclusion.

The city’s famous Christmas market fills Town Hall Square in the heart of the Old Town.

A tall tree stands above wooden stalls selling woollen gifts, candles and Estonian treats.

The square has displayed a public Christmas tree since 1441, giving the celebration a tradition that reaches far beyond today’s market season.

Try verivorst, an Estonian blood sausage usually served with sauerkraut, followed by gingerbread.

Warm glögi is the drink to order when the temperature falls.

Save your final evening for the market after sunset, then walk towards Toompea Hill to see Tallinn’s rooftops from above.

It is one of the best Christmas towns in Europe, although icy cobblestones demand sensible footwear.

Best Time to Visit Christmas Markets in Europe

Visit in late November for fewer crowds and better hotel choices, or early to mid December for the fullest festive experience.

Weekdays are quieter, while Christmas Eve and Christmas Day may bring reduced market, restaurant and attraction hours.
