Travelling on a budget is a quiet win. You still collect stories, moments, and memories just without losing sleep over money. There’s a freedom in knowing you’re exploring the world while keeping your future travels alive.
If you’ve known me for a while, I love a good bargain. Not because I avoid luxury (I’ve enjoyed it), but because some of my best memories came from simpler trips. Cheap stays, local food, long walks, and places that didn’t try too hard to impress.
Those trips taught me something gentle but lasting: travelling light on money often makes the experience feel richer. And every rupee saved is just another place calling your name.
Note: The budget destinations in this post reflect on-the-ground costs once you arrive. Flights aren’t included, as prices vary depending on where you’re flying from so be sure to factor that in when planning.
The daily budgets mentioned are approximate and suited for shoestring backpackers. If you prefer a more comfortable or luxury style of travel, you’ll want to adjust accordingly.
Places To Travel On A Budget
Let’s start with Central America
There are still a few big blanks on my travel bucket list, and Central America is one of them. Putting this list together only made the feeling stronger like the region quietly tapping me on the shoulder, saying soon.
Here are a few cheap places to visit in Central America
Mexico
Approximate daily budget: Mex$760/day (≈ £26 / €28 / $33 USD)
Mexico is wildly diverse, and what you spend really depends on where you choose to go.

If you’re travelling on a budget, skip the overhyped tourist spots like Cancun and look instead to places that feel more grounded Baja California, Oaxaca, and other lesser-known corners where culture, food, and colour come without the heavy price tag.
Cuba
Cuba is one of those places people talk about more than they visit. There’s this common belief that it’s expensive or difficult to travel but honestly, that couldn’t be further from the truth. If you’re happy travelling like a local, eating street food, hopping on local buses, and sleeping in dorms, Cuba can be surprisingly affordable.

The country does have its quirks, though. One of the most confusing is the dual currency system the local National Peso (CUP) and the tourist-focused Convertible Peso (CUC). It’s a quiet reflection of the gap between local life and tourist spending. While you’ll likely need both, travelling on a CUC budget adds up fast, so sticking to the National Peso whenever possible makes a real difference.
For context:
25 CUP ≈ 1 CUC
1 CUC ≈ $1 USD
That’s why Cuba’s daily budget can vary so much. Depending on how you travel and which currency you use, it can range anywhere from $20 – $55 USD (£14 – 43 / €16 – 48). But if you move slowly, spend consciously, and lean into local life, Cuba is absolutely doable on the lower end of that range and still rich in experience.
Nicaragua
Approximate daily budget: C$610/day (≈ £16 / €17.50 / $19 USD)
Nicaragua quietly sneaks into your heart. It’s one of the cheapest countries in Central America, but its charm is anything but small.
If you’re backpacking the region on a shoestring, spending a little extra time here is a smart choice the experiences feel richer without costing more.
I imagine wandering along its sun-drenched beaches, strolling through colourful cities, hopping to serene islands, and ending the day with the surreal sight of lava bubbling inside a volcano near Managua.
Moments like that remind you that travel doesn’t need to be expensive to be unforgettable.
Stick to local transport, eat street food, and stay in modest lodgings and Nicaragua becomes one of those rare places where your budget stretches as far as your curiosity.
South America
South America has always been calling me that vast, vibrant continent that promises adventure at every turn. My backpack is ready, my curiosity is high, and I can’t wait to wander through its cities, mountains, and hidden corners.
Most of South America is surprisingly affordable, which made it tough to narrow down this list. Every country has its own flavour, its own rhythm, its own stories waiting to be discovered.
If you have favourites I’ve missed, I’d love to hear about them there’s always another journey to add to the list.
Ecuador
Approximate daily budget: $25 USD/day (≈ £21 / €23)
Ecuador feels like a place that quietly surprises you. Most people think of the Galapagos and yes, they’re breathtaking but they come with a price tag that’ll make your wallet flinch. Travel a little differently, though, and Ecuador opens up gently.

I imagine heading to Baños, where waterfalls and hot springs invite you to linger without hurry. Group tours to the Amazon or the Andes are incredible, of course, but you can also explore on a shoestring and still feel like you’ve truly seen the heart of the country.
Ecuador proves that adventure doesn’t need to be expensive sometimes the simplest paths lead to the richest memories.
Bolivia
Approximate daily budget: Bs 160/day (≈ €22 / $24 USD)
Bolivia quietly calls to the wanderer in me. Known as one of South America’s cheapest and most beautiful countries, it’s a place that promises wonder without the heavy price tag.
I imagine standing on the world-famous salt flats, where the horizon stretches endlessly, or gliding across Lake Titicaca as the morning mist lifts, full of stories only those who wander closely will hear.
With simple stays, local food, and a curious heart, Bolivia is a place where even a modest budget feels like a ticket to magic.
Colombia
Approximate daily budget: COL$130,000/day (≈ €30 / $32 USD)
Colombia feels like a country that begs to be explored slowly, with curiosity as your guide. I picture myself wandering the streets of Bogotá, each corner brimming with colour and life, then hopping on a moped to discover the countryside at my own pace.

The north coastline calls for diving adventures with my PADI, and somewhere in the distance, the Cocora Valley awaits with its towering palms and misty mornings a landscape that feels almost otherworldly.
With local eats, simple stays, and a willingness to roam, Colombia is a place where a modest budget stretches as far as your sense of adventure.
Africa
Africa is wildly diverse mountains, deserts, lakes, coral reefs, rainforests, savannas. Every corner hums with adventure, each one ready to tell its story.
South Africa
Approximate daily budget: R 750/day (≈ €36 / $39 USD)
South Africa holds a special place in my travel memories it’s where I went on my first budget safari. Yes, you read that right: a safari doesn’t always have to cost hundreds of pounds.

I remember the thrill of spotting wildlife under wide, golden skies, feeling the earth hum beneath the jeep, and knowing that adventure like this doesn’t have to break the bank.

Morocco bursts with colour and culture from the winding streets of Fez to the vibrant souks of Marrakech, and of course, the iconic Casablanca. The best part? It can be surprisingly cheap to explore.
If you’re adventurous, willing to cook your own meals and camp along the way, daily costs can drop even further sometimes as little as £10/day. Morocco proves that travel doesn’t need to be expensive to be unforgettable.

Asia has always been my playground for budget adventures. The cost of living across this vast and diverse continent makes it possible to eat, sleep, and explore for less than £10 a day.
In many places leaving more of your budget for experiences, tours, or just wandering freely.
