Halloween Towns in America: 12 Worth The Trip (And 3 To Think Twice About)

I once stood in a foggy cemetery at dusk, holding a paper cup of cider and listening to a tour guide whisper a ghost story I will never forget. A stranger beside me muttered that the cider was the scariest part, and we both laughed until the guide shushed us. That evening sent me down a rabbit hole of planning Halloween towns in America, and I now know which ones earn the trip.

Updated 21 October 2026. This guide draws on official event pages and published travel coverage, not on a visit to every town. Dates, tickets and event lineups change every year, so check before you book. Some photos are illustrative.

Every October, dozens of places claim the title of the spookiest town in the country. Some deserve it. In contrast, others are crowded, pricey or simply not that spooky.

So below you will find fifteen options sorted by mood, with an honest take on who each one suits and which three deserve a second thought.

Spooky Halloween decorations that make Halloween towns in America worth the trip

Are Halloween Towns In America Worth The Trip?

Yes, if you pick the right one for your style. In fact, a good Halloween trip is not only about scares.

It is about autumn light, old streets, a hot drink in your hands and a story you cannot shake.

The catch is that the famous names get very crowded. Moreover, hotels sell out months ahead, and weekend prices climb fast.

So the smartest plan is to match the town to your mood, travel midweek if you can and book early.

What Makes A Great Halloween Destination?

I judged each place on four things. First, does the atmosphere hold up on an ordinary Tuesday, or does it depend on one big weekend? Second, can you enjoy it without paying for a ticketed event? Third, is it easy to reach and to park?

Finally, does it still feel like a real town once the crowds arrive?

The best Halloween towns in America tend to score well on at least three of those. Charleston and Savannah win on atmosphere, while Anoka and Cynthiana win on charm.

Salem, by contrast, wins on fame but loses on crowds.

Cost also matters. For example, ghost tours often run between roughly twenty and forty dollars a person, though prices vary, so check each operator.

A weekend in a small town can cost far less than a theme park day, which is why I lean toward the smaller places for a first trip.
Old cemetery used for ghost tours in historic towns

Best Spooky Towns For Ghost Stories And Haunted History

These six towns are about atmosphere. They have old cemeteries, historic streets and guides who love a good tale.

1. Sleepy Hollow, New York. First, the village leans hard into Washington Irving’s legend, and it does it well.

Sleepy Hollow Cemetery offers walking tours, and the Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze runs nearby at Van Cortlandt Manor, with thousands of carved pumpkins. It suits families and first timers.

However, weekends fill up, so buy timed tickets early. Also check the official event pages for this year’s schedule.

The village sits in the Hudson Valley, which I also cover in my guide to hidden vacation spots in the US.

2. Charleston, South Carolina. Charleston is gorgeous in October, and its ghost tours range from gentle history walks to proper scares.

One caution: Boone Hall Plantation announced in May 2026 that it was ending its Fright Nights event after more than twenty years, according to Live 5 News, so many older guides are out of date.

Instead, stick to the walking tours, the City Market and the food scene.

My guide to the best weekend getaways in the USA covers more of the city.

3. St. Augustine, Florida. Often called the country’s oldest city, it pairs ghost trolleys with Castillo de San Marcos and the St. Augustine Lighthouse, which has its own spooky reputation.

October is cooler and less humid than summer, which makes evening tours far more pleasant.

As a result, it suits anyone who wants chills without extreme scares.

Deep South And Capital Region Ghost Stories

4. Savannah, Georgia. Similarly, Savannah’s leafy squares look haunted all year, and the pub crawls and cemetery tours lean into it.

The city has a designated area where adults can carry drinks, but rules change, so check before you rely on it.

Moreover, weekends near Halloween get lively, so book dinner ahead. For a slower visit, see how it fits into my romantic getaways guide.

5. New Orleans, Louisiana. The city is spooky every month, so Halloween simply adds events on top.

Cemetery tours, the Voodoo Museum and haunted houses are popular, and guided visits are the easiest way into the famous above ground cemeteries.

Overall, it suits adults who want nightlife with their ghost stories, not a quiet family trip. I also include it in my guide to the best places to visit in the USA.

6. Alexandria, Virginia. Old Town Alexandria is a gentle surprise. Lantern led ghost tours run past places like Gadsby’s Tavern Museum and Carlyle House, and Old Town streets get decked out for the season.

Besides, it is close to Washington, DC, so it works well for a short trip.

If you want fun more than fear, these five small towns are the ones to watch.

7. Half Moon Bay, California. First, fog rolls in off the Pacific, and pumpkin patches line the coast. The town hosts an Art and Pumpkin Festival in October, and you can add moonlit walks.

It suits couples and families. However, festival weekends bring traffic, so arrive early.

The town is also a natural first stop on my Northern California road trip itinerary.

8. St. Helens, Oregon. Fans know this one as the filming spot for the movie Halloweentown. The Spirit of Halloweentown festival runs on weekends through the fall, and the 2026 season runs from late September through November 1, according to the organizers.

For example, entry to the downtown plaza is free, while some attractions need a ticketed pass. Check the official festival site for current details.

In addition, it is a good detour from Portland, which features in my Oregon road trip itinerary.

Pumpkin Festivals And Small Town Parades

9. Laconia, New Hampshire. Next, this is the home of a famous pumpkin festival, with a tower of carved pumpkins that draws crowds in the weekend before Halloween.

Because festival plans can change, confirm that it is running before you drive.

Meanwhile, the area also suits a fall New England road trip with farms and breweries.

10. Anoka, Minnesota. Then the city calls itself the Halloween Capital of the World.

According to Mental Floss, the tradition started with a kids parade in the 1920s to curb Halloween pranks.

For instance, expect parades, costume contests and a big bonfire. Therefore, it is old fashioned and family friendly, not scary.

11. Cynthiana, Kentucky. Small, quirky and refreshingly uncrowded, this town goes all in with a Skeleton Adoption Agency storefront, a Witches’ Day Out block party and ghost tours at the Rohs Opera House.

Consequently, it suits travelers who prefer odd and charming over polished. Check the local tourism office for dates.

Where To Sleep In A Haunted Hotel

12. Eureka Springs, Arkansas. Finally, this Ozark town is the best pick for a haunted stay. The 1886 Crescent Hotel runs a nightly ghost tour, and tours are limited and sell out quickly, according to Visit Eureka Springs.

Besides, Basin Park Hotel is another option, and town events include a Zombie Crawl and a Witches Ball. Book your room and your tour before you book anything else.

A word on haunted hotels in general: stories are part of the marketing, so go for the fun, not for proof. Also, if you want a good night’s sleep, ask for a room away from the busiest hallways.

Halloween Towns In America To Think Twice About

Now, here is where I stay honest. Still, these three are famous, and they can be a good trip, but they are not for everyone.

13. Salem, Massachusetts. To begin with, Salem is the obvious pick, and that is the problem. The festival, called Haunted Happenings, began in 1982, and the organizers report more than half a million visitors in October, as the festival’s own press release explains.

The city itself advises weekend visitors to take the train, the ferry or satellite parking. Therefore, if you hate crowds, go on a weekday, or visit in September instead.

14. Estes Park, Colorado. The Stanley Hotel, which inspired Stephen King’s The Shining, offers ghost tours, murder mystery dinners and a Halloween ball. However, the rest of the town is more mountain gateway than haunted village, so do not expect spooky streets.

Then combine it with Rocky Mountain National Park, and book far ahead. My Colorado road trip itinerary shows how to fit Estes Park into a longer route.

15. Orlando, Florida. Finally, it is not a town, and it is not cheap. Disney and Universal run big Halloween events, and Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights is a proper scare fest for teens and adults.

Moreover, tickets sell out, and costs add up quickly.

If this is your plan, read my guide to Disney World on a budget before you book.

Practical Tips For Halloween Towns In America

A few habits make any of these trips easier.

Book early. October is peak season, so hotels and tours sell out months ahead. Also check cancellation terms before you pay. For more ways to lower the bill, see my tips on saving money while traveling.

Go midweek. Because weekends bring the biggest crowds and the highest prices, midweek wins. In fact, a Tuesday or Wednesday often feels like a different town.

Dress in layers. Besides, evenings turn cold fast, especially in New England and the mountains. So pack a warm jacket and comfortable shoes.

Use public transport where possible. Parking is hard in places like Salem, so trains and shuttles, therefore, save time and stress.

Confirm event dates. Many festivals change schedules or end altogether, as the Boone Hall news shows. So check the official page before you drive.

Pick Your Halloween Trip By Region

If you are not sure where to start, choose by where you live and how far you will travel.

On the East Coast, combine Sleepy Hollow and Salem on a New England loop, or head south to Alexandria and Charleston.

Meanwhile, in the South, Savannah, St. Augustine and New Orleans give you ghost tours with warm evenings. In the Midwest, however, Anoka and Cynthiana suit a relaxed road trip.

Finally, out West, pair Half Moon Bay or St. Helens with a coastal drive.

FAQ: Planning Your Halloween Trip

For ghost stories, Charleston, Savannah and St. Augustine are strong picks. For pumpkins and family fun, look at Sleepy Hollow, St. Helens and Anoka.

When should you visit Halloween towns?

Most festivals run all October, and some start in September. Generally, weekdays and early October are quieter than the weekend before Halloween.

Which Halloween town is best for families?

Overall, Anoka, St. Helens and Half Moon Bay lean family friendly, with parades, pumpkins and daytime events.

Is Salem worth visiting at Halloween?

It can be, however, if you plan around the crowds. Go midweek, use trains or satellite parking and book tours ahead.

Final Thought

The best Halloween trip is the one that matches your mood, not the one with the biggest name. So pick one or two towns, book early and leave room for a slow evening with a hot drink and a good story.

If you do that, the fall air will do the rest.
